Neighbours Special

Inside Soap, UK, 28th January 2006

Neighbours may be 20 years old, but the script producer Ben Micheal says the Aussie Soap has alot to offer ....

In 2005, Neighbours celebrated 20 years on Aussie screens by bringing back much loved characters from yesteryear. But how is thew show going to top that this year? Script Producers Ben Micheal and Luke Devenish are responsible for coming up with the twists and turns you see on screen, and Ben tells us that we can expect the drama to continue as the soap approaches it's 5000th episode....

2005 was a huge year for Neighbours, with the 20th anniversary celebrations, What were your highlights of the past 12 months?

I enjoyed the Karl, Susan and Izzy Love triangle. I particually liked plotting how everything would come undone for Izzy. We'd been running the storyline for 2 years and it has built up alot of expectation in that time. My other favourite moment is the plane crash, of course at the start of the year. It came to us over a few beers at the end of a long week. We just werent interested in another cab driving off, with everyone waving farewell. It was the 20th year and we wanted to try something new, and I was really proud of the end result.

What was the thinking behind the reunion documentary which brought together Ramsay Street residents old and new, and are you happy the way it turned out?

We needed a reason for former resident to return, and we had to be able to film past actors who were now living overseas, so the documentary seemed to fit. I was really pleased with the outcome. It was one for the hardcore fans, and on the whole, I think they enjoyed it.

Neighbours also celebrated the past by bringing back Paul Robinson as a regular character. Do you enjoy writing for him?

Paul's fantastic to write for. Stefan Dennis who plays him, will let you throw anythiny his way and make it work-Paul's been through a fair bit over the last 12 months! We've made him much darker than he was before, eight years in prison can do strange things to a person! Paul's our suburban JR Ewing, and we love him for it.

We're thrilled to see the likes of Joe Mangel back in Erinsborough, as well as Kerry Bishop's doppelganger, Gabby, popping in, too. Are there any former faces that you would like to return?

We occasionally think about bringing characters back, but it's something we want to do all the time, as it can loose value. Mrs Mangel would be my dream, though- she's one of soaps greatest!

The Timmins family have been another major additon to the show, What brought about there arrival?

It just seemed as though we had to many "good" parents in Ramsay Street. We wanted to portray another type of family- one that hurts each other and does outrageous things, but when all is said and done, they do have a great love for one another. In many ways, the Timmins family clan are closer to reality of most families. And there also very Australian, which I Like!

Neighbours and Home and Away are often compared to one another. In what ways do you think they differ?

Home and Away is more thrills and spills show and does huge, crazy stories. It's also more youth orientated, whereas we're more character driven and give more screen time to older residents. We have been upping the drama over the last few years, but our viewers wouldnt let us get away with some stuff that Home and Away fans love.

Finally, have you drawn up any plans for another big storyline to commemorate 20 years of Neighbours screening in the UK this October?

We've just plotted week 1000 - the 5000th episode of the show! It's a huge week, and you'll be seeing it here around actober. Expect great drama!

THE INSIDE STORY - We reveal what dramas lie in store for the Ramsay Street gang in the near future ....

Killer Harold!

Yes, the rumours are true, This year we see Harold try to kill the person he feels is to blame for Lil, David and Serena's deaths. His Victim? Well, let's not say his is the most popular man in Erinsborough.

"Harold reaches a crisis point, that he has never had to contemplate before" says Producer Peter Dodds.

Robinson reunion?

We've already seen Elle Join her dad. But there's more to come with the arrival of Paul's son Robert. Played by actor Andy Hunter. Robert will be reunited with his father later on this year. And with the news Paul's ex wife and the triplets mum Gail Lewis to return, will third twin Cameron follow her to Erinsborough, to make a hat trick?
