On the Box - Ben Nicholas by Vanessa Santer

MX, Australia, 20th March 2006

Australia’s Brainiest Neighbour will sort the brains from the brawn in Ramsay Street. Ben Nicholas gives us his tips.

Q. Are you worried you’re going to look silly?

A. Not really, it’s all a bit of fun really.

Q. How are you doing academically at school?

A. I am doing OK – a lot better now that I study. Year 10 was difficult because I was juggling work and school.

Q. Do actors have to be intelligent?

A. Not necessarily, but most of them are.

Q. Will there be some healthy competition?

A. Oh yeah, there always is.

Q. Who do you suspect is the brainiest neighbour?

A. Stephen Lovatt is the one to look out for. He’s a very brainy, well-read guy.

Q. Have you watched the other “Brainiest” shows?

A. Yes, I watched the Brainiest Comedians. They were all incredibly smart.

Q. What is your knowledge strength?

A. 20th century history.

Q. What do you love about being on Neighbours?

A. I’ve been acting all my life, and I love the people I work with, and learning every day.

Q. Are you planning on launching a pop career?

A. I wouldn’t say a pop career, but I come from a musical theatre background and am in a band… we played a few gigs before Christmas.

Q. Do you ever get stopped in the street or in a supermarket?

A. Sometimes. Most people are nice and just want to have a chat.

Q. What do you admire about your character?

A. I like Stingray’s energy and the fact that he has no boundaries.

Q. Anything you both have in common?

A. I think we both like to try and make people laugh – though, in Stingray’s case, I’d say it was people laughing at him not with him. Hopefully that’s not the same with me.

Q. How do you juggle school with acting?

A. It’s a really good lesson in time management. You may only make it to one class a week, so the weekend is spent juggling schoolwork, learning lines and trying to do normal weekend relaxing things.

Q. Where will you be in five to 10 years?

A. In America, doing feature films.
