Vote for Neighbours

Inside Soap, UK, 6th August 2005

This past year has seen big changes in Ramsay Street, with the destruction of the iconic Lassiters complex, the split of Karl and Susan Kennedy, and the return of the shows most notorious bad boy, Paul Robinson. As the Aussie soap approaches its 20th birthday celebration, Inside Soap got the cast together to reveal why they think neighbours deserves to be an award winner.

It’s certainly been a big year for Neighbours – what’s been your highlight?

Natalie Bassingthwaighte (Izzy): Just the way the show has really spiced things up over the past year, and the fact the viewers are really getting into it more than ever.

Stefan Dennis (Paul): I loved the burning-down of Lassiters, as they were the most exciting scenes to film. And for me, just returning to the show and being the new boy again has been great.

Stephanie McIntosh (Sky): We’re proud of everything we’ve done in the run up to the 20th anniversary, everyone has cherished it.

Which of your fellow cast members most deserves to win an award?

Natalie: Jackie Woodbourne, who plays Susan. Every time I do a scene with her I’m nervous, as I want to be as good as she is. She’s taught me a lot.

Ben Nicholas (Stingray): Damien Brodie, who plays my on-screen brother Dylan. He’s so dedicated and loves acting.

Stephanie: Kevin Harrington, who plays my uncle, David. I feel lucky to even be on the same set as him!

Two of the most hotly contested awards are for Sexiest Male and Female. Neighbours certainly has a lot of contenders but who deserves to win?

Stephanie: I have to say Kyal Marsh, who plays Boyd.

Ben: Stephanie McIntosh. She’s a very good girl.

Natalie: Well, I’ll have to say Alan Fletcher or he’ll kill me!

Stefan: In the interests of diplomacy, I’d say Ian Smith who plays Harold!

Which scenes have you yourselves been particularly proud of in the past year?

Natalie: The scenes where Izzy lost her baby and went haywire for a while – I was very proud of those.

Ben: When Dylan first arrived, we did a storyline where he stole some dogs from the RSPCA. We shot it all at night and it was great fun.

Stefan: There’s some big stuff coming up where Paul ends up in a perilous position, which was great to film.

Stephanie: Just the emotional stuff I get to film, as Sky’s been through so much in her life – the writers tend to give the charater storylines that are a bit sad, which I love!

How about a quick bribe in return for readers’ votes – can you five is some hints on what’s coming up in the future?

Stefan: The Robinson family is expanding and some exciting new things are happening. It’ll be different to the others – think Dallas rather than Erinsborough!

Natalie: There’s a huge turning point coming in one of the family’s lives….

Ben: ….and the anniversary is amazing – so many of my childhood heroes are back!

Stephanie: The return of Joe Mangel – Sky’s Dad – played by Mark Little. It’s going to be very emotional for Sky.

Finally, can you sum up why Neighbours deserves to be an award winner?

Stephanie: Because everyone needs good Neighbours, of course! And after 20 years, it deserves to be a huge celebration.

Stefan: Because our storylines are so true to life – stories that people can really relate to.

Natalie: Neighbours deserves to win because the show has done brilliant stories for 20 years, and has never gone backwards. It deals with real issues, but is a heap of fun at the same time.

Best Actor nominee Alan Fletcher tells us why Dr Karl’s affair with Izzy is the sizzling storyline of the year……

Of all the Neighbours storylines this year, perhaps the most sensational has been the breakdown of Karl Kennedy’s marriage to Susan, and his torrid romance with Izzy Hoyland. The hot plot has been nominated as one of the best storylines of 2005, a fact which makes Alan Fletcher very proud…..

“I’m so pleased the viewers have responded to it,” says the actor. “It’s been a great story to do and I can’t believe its still going on! When will poor Karl find out what Izzy’s been up to? People I meet beg me to get back together with Susan,” reveals Alan.

“Even though Karl’s been so weak through all this, they all want Susan to take him back and for him to dump Izzy.”

After 11 years on Neighbours, you make think Alan has seen it all, but he insists the show has excelled itself as the 20th birthday celebrations approach.

“More than ever, the show combines comedy and drama better than any other soap,” says the actor.

“We have a real freshness that makes Neighbours different. We’ve all really enjoyed this past year.”

But when it comes down to choosing his favourite aspect of the show, Alan generously singles out some new arrivals for praise.

“Seeing the development of the Timmins family has been great,” says the actor. “It’s been a pleasure to watch the kids grow. And Nell Feeney, who plays Janelle, has taken her character to new heights, as have all the excellent youngsters who have come into the show.”
