Ben Meets Blue Peter "Erinsborough News", BBCi, December 2005
It’s been a big week for Ben Nicholas (Stingray ). Not only is he currently juggling work with his important VCE exams at school, he’s also been filmed for legendary children’s show Blue Peter .
We asked Blue Peter producer Matthew Gyves why they decided to interview Ramsay Street’s most hyperactive resident .
“On Blue Peter we have a strand called ‘Me on TV’ where we look at the lives of interesting children,” Matthew explains.
“Obviously Ben Nicholas is very popular with the Blue Peter audience and a heart-throb for many of the girls . Getting an insight into what it means to be a child actor in a programme as huge as Neighbours will make a fascinating feature.”
Fascinating indeed. The cameras followed 17 year old Ben for an entire day. They saw him being transformed into Stingray via the wonders of wardrobe and hair and make-up as well as learning lines in the green room.
They also did some filming in the school room, somewhere Ben has had to spend a fair bit of time lately. This year he’s taking two Year 12 subjects: Australian History and Media. Next year he plans to complete his course with English, International Politics and Dance.
However, Ben admits that it isn’t easy to combine his studies with a full time job.
“Sometimes I'm on set for 12 hours a day and it's hard to study there because it's so distracting,” he says.
However, there are some advantages. Word has it that Neighbours cast-mates lent Ben a helping hand and appeared in his media studies short film. We also think that he deserves some serious bonus points for being nominated for the ‘Most Popular Male New Talent’ Logie award this year .
The Blue Peter team originally headed to Australia to cover the World Gymnastic Championships. However, they couldn’t let the opportunity to visit the Neighbours set pass them by.
“Our presenter, Matt Baker , is a huge Neighbours fan,” Matthew admits. “He jumped at the idea of going to Ramsay Street!”
Matthew adds that Matt and the rest of the team, weren’t disappointed.
“Matt and the crew had a fantastic time seeing what goes on behind the scenes ,” says Matthew. “ The cast and crew all work so hard and Ben was great. ”
Ben’s ‘Me on TV’ segment will be shown as part of a Blue Peter Melbourne special on Friday, 3rd of February 2006, so make sure you tune in!
