INTERVIEWS & ARTICLES
Ask the Actor BBCi, 27th July 2004
Minky: Do you have a girlfriend and what would your ideal girlfriend be like?
Ben: Unfortunately I don't have a girlfriend. My ideal girl would be anyone easy going, down to earth, funny. Serena, she's a lovely girl, she means well but she can hurt your feelings sometimes. Now Lara, who plays Serena I'd go out with, she's lovely.
Dave: Do you think Scott and Serena are well suited enough to last long term?
Ben: I think they're very different, their characters complement each other. They're one of those relationships that's on and off all the time.
Tracey: If you had to go out with somebody from the cast who would it be?
Ben: I'd probably go out with one of the girls! Probably Lara who plays Serena or Steph who plays Sky. It gets confusing because Steph plays Sky, and Carla Bonner plays Steph!
Becky Tottman: Do you have any celebrity friends? And if not, who would you most like to hang out with?
Ben: Probably someone really funny like a comedian, or Johnny Depp because I think he's a really cool actor - he rocks.
Jessie: Do you believe in ghosts, and have you ever seen one?
Ben: Yes, I do believe in ghosts, and yes I've seen one. I was in my mum and dad's bed once, and I saw this head come out of nowhere - it was very weird!
Fran: What really gets on your nerves and when was the last time you lost your temper?
Ben: What really gets on my nerves is when you're driving, when people stop on keep clear zones at the lights, and block your way.
Angie, Blackpool: What's the weirdest/funniest thing you've ever read about yourself?
Ben: That would have to be when someone did an article about me and Serena and it said that we'd said we get really into our characters, and that if we have a fighting scene, afterwards we can't look at each other because we're so in character that we can't be nice to each other - that doesn't happen!
Kat, Cambridge: How are you different from Scott and how do you get into the role before filming?
Ben: I'm a little bit cheeky like Scott. When I first started it was a lot harder to get into the role, but now it gets easier to switch it on and off. I think over time it just gets easier.
Tommo, Sussex: How much do you ad-lib on set? Which of Scott's antics, mannerisms and lingo is your own?
Ben: None of the lingo is mine, it's all created by the writers. Lots of the mannerisms are mine, like the way I squeeze sauce, play air guitar. You can't really ad lib on set but during rehearsals you can make suggestions. So it's ad libbing that then becomes part of the script.
Marky, East Sussex: If you could make up your own family out of characters from Neighbours - who would you choose?
Ben: That's tough. Susan for a mum, Karl or Max for a dad, Sindi for a big sister, Serena for a girlfriend, Boyd for a best mate, Sky for a best mate's girlfriend. And all the animals would live with us too!
Cath: Do you ever get embarrassed when filming a scene? How do you deal with it?
Ben: I don't really get embarrassed, and when we're filming scenes the crew are so cool about it and really professional. Like when me and Serena first did our kissing scene, we were a little bit nervous but the crew have seen it so many times, and had so many young couples that have come through the show that it was old news to them.
Mary, Melbourne: What's the worst part about being an actor?
Ben: There isn't really anything bad - the worst thing has to be the early mornings but apart from that everything's a-ok!
Tasha, Lewes: Have you had any bad reactions from people who are jealous of your success?
Ben: No! Of course not - all my mates at school are totally cool about it and don't really talk about it, or about Neighbours or anything. No one's jealous, everyone's really cool.
Lana, Heathfield: People say you are what you eat - so what are you?
Ben: Good question - I like Mexican. But everyday when I come into work I have a ham and cheese barbecue sauce sandwich - since I've started, I've had a lot!
Zoe: What would you like to talk about but never get asked about?
Ben: This is a hard question! It's difficult. My animals, my cat and my dog. My cat Coco and my dog Lassie.
